Theme: Congressional Call to Action

Date: Every day of the week

Time: 6:00pm to 8:00pm (GMT)

Place: Wherever you are with a phone

We asked you to Join in with other American women to contact your state Senators and Representative for a weekly Congressional call-in. We encouraged you to call any day of the week, from wherever you are as long as you have a phone or access to a calling service. Each week we featured a different issue along with a calling script you can use in speaking to your elected officials.

The Senate’s bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the Better Care Reconciliation Act, is a nightmare for women. It penalizes women’s reproductive choices by increasing healthcare costs for women both for being pregnant and for not being pregnant. It cuts vital funding for Medicaid, disproportionately impacting lower income women, women of color, and women with complex medical conditions.

Living in the UK, we have access to comprehensive, high quality healthcare through the NHS. However, each of us knows someone back home who will be negatively impacted if the Republican repeal of the Affordable Care Act is successful. And for those of us who plan to return to the US, it greatly impact our future healthcare. Those of us with complex medical conditions may not even have the option to return if can’t get care because of pre-existing conditions.

Join the DAUK Women’s Caucus as we let our Senators know exactly how we feel about protecting our healthcare. Below are two scripts you can use when you call, depending on the stance of your Senators. Remember to call both Senators and make sure you have your voting address.

If your Senator supports repealing the Affordable Care Act or is on the fence:

Hello,

My name is [your name] and I am a constituent of Senator [Senator’s name]. I am calling to ask that the Senator oppose the Better Care Reconciliation Act. The Better Care Reconciliation Act will disproportionally impact women, particularly low to moderate income women and women of color. The bill would eliminate critical protections in the Affordable Care Act that prohibit discrimination against women in the provision of health care. Insurers would no longer be required to provide women coverage for services such as maternity care and they would be allowed to charge women more that coverage if they do offer it. And it will erode women’s access to reproductive healthcare by dismantling no-copay birth control and defunding the organizations that provide this care.

[Include a personal story about how the ACA repeal will affect you or your friends and family back home.]

Healthcare is key to women’s well-being and economic stability. I urge the Senator to stand up for [his/her] female constituents and oppose any repeal bill that repeals the Affordable Care Act.

If your Senator opposes the repeal of the Affordable Care Act:

Hello,

My name is [your name] and I am a constituent of Senator [Senator’s name]. I am calling to thank the Senator for opposing the Better Care Reconciliation Act. As the Senator is aware, repealing the Affordable Care Act will disproportionally impact women, particularly low to moderate income women and women of color. It would allow insurers to discriminate against women, deny them health coverage

based on “pre-existing conditions”, and make insurance more expensive for women. Further, it will erode women’s access to reproductive healthcare by dismantling no-copay birth control and defunding the organizations that provide this care.

[Include a personal story about how the ACA repeal will affect you or your friends and family back home.]

I want to thank the Senator for standing up for [his/her] female constituents and opposing any repeal of the Affordable Care Act. Please urge the Senator to ask [his/her] colleagues to do the same.

Thank you.
